The primary role of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) is to assist in the distribution of Holy Communion when there are not enough ordained ministers—bishops, priests, and deacons—to serve the congregation. This need often arises in parishes with large congregations, such as OLM, or during special liturgical celebrations where the number of communicants is particularly high.
Serving as an EMHC is a profoundly spiritual and fulfilling experience, offering laypeople a unique opportunity to engage in the liturgical life of the Church.
By distributing the Body and Blood of Christ, not only to the congregation at Mass but also to the housebound and sick, EMHCs become vessels of God’s grace, contributing to the spiritual nourishment of the faithful.
